Fairy Tale, a Poem by Prof. Ljiljana Samardžić

I am waiting for you at the station
of one of the most beautiful
European cities.
Your train is over half an hour late.
I sit on a bench, rehearsing
the welcome I have prepared
for our first meeting,
after so many years...

Deep in my little speech,
I startle at the announcement
of your train’s arrival.
"So soon", I think,
I jump from the bench
and run toward the tracks.
The train pulls in, and your radiant face
is already watching me from the window.
You are the first at the door,
in an instant, you are before me,
holding me tight,
I forget every word I had prepared.
It feels as if our embrace lasts
as long as all the years
of our longing and waiting.

Finally, we pull apart,
still silent.
Mute with happiness,
still not believing
that we are finally together,
we just look at each other.

One hand of mine is in yours,
with the other we pull our suitcases,
we’ll stay here for a few days,
and then we move on...
A bit to my country,
maybe somewhere else,
It's the least important
which way we'll go.

If we truly met,
everything would be like this,
a fairy tale in the midst of reality
that breaks our dreams.
