Three Poems by Narendra Pundrik & Translated from Hindi to English by Neha Bhandarkar

MOTHER BECAME A BRIDGE

Between us siblings
Mother became a bridge
Through every passing day
She ran across it fearlessly
Without the need for any green or red signals
Carrying the chug-chug,
choo choo, clack-clack
of us siblings.

After Father passed away
Between us siblings
Mother became a bridge
She did not break all at once
She kept breaking, little by little.
We stood by and watched
And finally admitted
Mother is growing old.

We treated Mother’s repeated words
As commands to be obeyed
Yet, through her habit of aging
And through every tremor in her voice
Mother slowly crumbled away.

She who once held our hands,
She who was always by our side
One day, she came to rest upon our shoulders.
Gradually, we began to feel it
Upon shoulders as strong as a bull’s
We felt the weight of Mother growing heavy.

As long as Mother was alive
We kept shifting her from one shoulder to the other.
For a mother is, after all, a mother
Seeing how we kept
Constantly switching shoulders,
Mother stepped down from our shoulders
And the moment Mother stepped down
Our shoulders, too, slumped low.

MOTHER WAS BREAKING

Mother was breaking.
Mother’s breaking...
We never truly witnessed it.

The first time Mother broke
Was precisely when
We, like migratory birds
Were constantly coming and going.

The second time Mother broke
Was when, for our sake
She had left behind
Her own home and hearth.

The third time Mother broke
Was exactly when
Father was no longer amongst us
It was then that Mother
Appeared utterly desolate to us.

The fourth time she broke
Was when she was living in 'our' house
She had come to realize
Her own homelessness.

MOTHER ALONE

The living room...
a place where I do not truly 'live'
I merely sit there for a short while
For as long as I happen to be in the room
Or for as long as a visiting guest chooses to stay.

I am not truly 'present' in the living room
There is only a photograph of my existence there
And those objects
Within which, in some way or another, I reside.

It remains uncertain even now
In this living room where my image currently resides
After I am gone
Will another person’s photograph hang upon the wall?
Or will mine simply be taken down?

Absent from this living room
Are the photographs of Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt.
I imagine that, at some point in time,
Photographic negatives must have existed for them too
Why, then, were those negatives not preserved?
Why are none of them Grandmother, Sister, Aunt
present in this living room?
Why, within this very house,
Was a space—a 'home'—not created specifically for them?
For she, Mother...who lived within this house
Much like a daughter-in-law...
Amidst all the men in this living room,
Mother stands utterly alone.
It did not feel right
Not nearly as right as she would have felt
In the company of her elder and younger brothers-in-law’s wives;
Here, amidst a gathering of men,
Mother, too, deserved to have
A space of her own.

Two Poems by Dr. Firdaus Khan

Memories

Some of the memories
are reserved for those nice moments...

when on the earth
the carpet of moonlight spreads all around
where the flowers with their moisten smell
make the nature more romantic...

and the season of romance blooming everywhere
when the eye-lash gratifying with lusty cheers
and there is an immediate desire of heart
that this time must stop here and now...

and throughout such a moment
too many centuries be surpassed…

Unknown Season of Love...

When
in the calm and lonely night
a breezing wind sings a song
of quite unknown season of love...

I do start changing
the pages of my past days
one by one...

and even more to the introversion
where in the island of memories or
such as like
once hot summer's afternoon of June
I feel warmth of your that touch
even now feeling that at this moment...

Start Praying, a Poem by Eva Petropoulou Lianou

Hate
War
Words that has bring people to the chaos

The absolute chaos
Who's supporting this evil??
We are
With our silence
With our selfiness
With our personal issues
With our blindness

Because man is the greatest monster of everyone
Open your eyes
Open your heart
Open your hands to sky
Start praying

Protest of Wind, a Poem by Rafia Bukhari

Darkness was more bright,
Once it sounded so sagacious,
Somewhat of incredible light,
Streaming to earth so gracious.
It sounded as if something split,

Two Poems by Võ Thị Như Mai

THE MANY MOODS OF AUGUST

Gentle August rain opens for autumn’s arrival
Summer left with its wistful memories
For the new month of sweet recollections
Scent of golden persimmon floating in the breeze

That aroma is a hallmark of season change
Those shy golden fruits behind green leaves
I remember grandmother’s tale of Miss Tam
Stepping out as if born from a dream

August in the countryside can be a burden
Of a new school year with lots of fees
Parents in the rice field upon their knees
Working hard for their children’s education

August can be a season of worry
University acceptance brings much joy
Tuition concerns and unemployed
The path of knowledge can be rough

August sunlight spreading across the village
Embracing life with its simple soul
Unpredictable weather and refreshing love
Let us welcome the many moods of August!
□

THE SENTIMENTS OF AUGUST

August starts with a cup of coffee
Piano notes drifting through the window
The falling leaves are still freshly gold
Mingling with the scent of earthy soil

This moment between season changing
People have passed through our lives
The wound not yet healed in the empty spaces
A touch of late summer sunshine remains

August is wrapped in the lotus leaves
The streets seem to slow down all of a sudden
To hold onto these rare moments
Of the magic transition floating in the air

Autumn rains like strangers come and go
Leaving dewdrops sparkling in her hair
He brushes of a golden leaf from her shoulder
Adding a smile into the sunlight

August gives them the time for reflection
To look within and to nurture their passion
We can find happiness in simple things
Thanks, August, for your sweet emotions!

Midnight Call, a Poem by Emmanuel Mettles

I keep my casement ajar.
For the westerlies shall call me at midmight,
 bringing the news
       of thy advent from afar.
The hamlet you dwell in isn't far-flung.
  Yet it's obscure,
the spot where thy heart bides.
neither violets,
Nor lilacs had been planted in your yard,
to remind you the scent of my skin.
No sketch of my tress is arrayed on your
   wall,
recalling a wet dusk
          you kissed the moonlight.
        No clouds shall be sent,
Nay a note shall knock thy doors.
Nae bird song,
 naw strands of eddying sun,
Ha! No more leaf veins shall evoke
     a note we hummed,
           while walking on sweet vows.
Natheless, I keep my casements ajar.
For the midnight bird shall call me at pitch dark.
Bringing the news of thy arrival
at my threshold, from the farthest nook of time.

TRACES..., HOW MUCH KILLED ME!, A POEM BY KUJTIM HAJDARI

Often times, on my shoulders, fell the raining,
Blinded my eyes, the lightning with flame,
And the thunderings left me deaf, left me blind
But they fled one day, gone as a game.

They hide aside in my memory,
Except their traces, they remained for long
(Too long in time, how they killed me ...!)
My soul was covered with blackness and night.

They were never forgotten, nor erase,
With their sad and dark colors,
They were written and left deep in my eyes,
Left their shadows, although faint.

It happens they wake me up from sleep,
Smiles sometimes turn me off, cut them off,
I feel deeply the empty soul, that something lost,
Except desire and hope, for future, I strong keep.

Three Poems by Jasna Gugić

STAY

Cover me with your beauty
Fill the cracks in my heart
Without you
I’m a dried up source
A standing river
I’m the road which
Leads to nowhere
Silent in helplessness
All alone without a splendour
Impersonal views
Staring at yesterday
Blind for tomorrow
So, don’t leave without
Turning your eyes around
Stay close
The night is descending
It’s too black and I fear
The shadows of darkness
Stay with me
Be the fire of life
That shines in me.

SPRING

Spring is more beautiful
in the backyard of my childhood
under a cherry blossom in bloom.
Fluid and divine white,
adorned with wishes,
colorful,
dreamed in imagination
this present and untouchable love
who constantly struggles with fear
cocoon
in the depths of the soul.

GOOD MORNING

The morning stretches on
over my sleeping city,
extending from my hands
endlessly into the blue,
and a big yellow sun
enters your bright eyes.
Don't you feel
in this morning of hope,
the shaking of my hands
open to all your infinities.
Good morning my love,
I kiss your eyes
bathed in dew
in this morning
of blue longing,
and I give you
the hug of life,
forever.

LOVE'S PROMISES, a Poem by Marlon Salem Gruezo-Bondroff

We vowed to love each other till the end of time
To cherish every moment and never let go
We swore to be faithful, loyal and kind
To support each other through joy and woe

We promised to share our hopes and dreams
To listen with patience and understanding
We pledged to respect our differences and needs
To compromise with grace and forgiving

We committed to face the challenges ahead
To overcome the obstacles and fears
We agreed to work as a team and lead
To grow together through the years

We affirmed to celebrate our successes and achievements
To appreciate our efforts and talents
We declared to express our gratitude and compliments
To uplift each other with encouragement

We guaranteed to nurture our passion and intimacy
To keep the flame of desire alive
We assured to show our affection and fidelity
To satisfy each other and thrive

We sealed our love with a kiss and a ring
To symbolize our bond and devotion
We made these promises and everything
To honor our love and emotions.

Two Poems by Sezgi Kaya

LONGING FOR A MOTHER

The breath that fills my lungs today,
Reminds me of my mother,
Her compassionate gazes,
Believe me, they warm my heart,

My tearful eyes reflected in the mirror,
Always make me miss my mother,
My shaking hands and my aching wounded heart
Longing for my mother’s warmth,

My hair that is blown by the harsh winds today,
Waiting for my mother’s affection and caress
In this suffering world with endless sorrow and trouble,
Makes me long for a drop of mother’s love with a candle...

THE INK OF A PEN

You don’t know what can be said in the ink of a pen,
Sometimes you hear the humming sound of loneliness and sometimes of sorrow,
If your pen is not sharper than a sword,
One day you will cry with what leaks from your ink,

You don’t know what can be said in the ink of a pen,
Sometimes you heal a wounded bird with a broken wing,
If your pen is no remedy for people in trouble,
You will also be wounded with what leaks from your ink,

You don’t know what can be said in the ink of a pen,
You relight a lantern that has long gone out,
If poison flows from your pen instead of ink,
You will also sip the sherbet of death with what spills from your ink.

Two Poems by Kareem Abudallah

When Love Breathes

Happiness is not a fleeting laugh,
nor a gown of light draped over time’s shoulders
Happiness, my love, is your hand holding mine —
as if you're holding the world,
as if I am the only truth in this night.
I do not laugh because I am happy;
I laugh because your eyes taught mine
how to bloom smiles from deep within—
from the same place where pain once carved its silence.
The love between us is not an event—
it is a climate.
In it, words bud like spring,
and meanings tremble with shy delight.
When your palm touches mine,
a language is born between our fingers—
a language unknown to dictionaries,
yet it dwells in my heart as a bird dwells
in the shadow of a tree.
We laugh at nothing—
at a shared sip of coffee,
at a typo in a message,
at a whisper that sounds like a song
the world forgot to write about us. We laugh,
for we lived too long outside this joy.
But when we found one another,
we began to write happiness across our faces
like rain writing its name on the windowpane.
O you who taught me
that time is something to be lived— that night is not just for sleep,
but for embraces,
for late-night talks, and for dreaming of a small house where light stretches from your gaze to my chest.
And so I tell you:
If happiness is a heaven,
then you are its open gate.
And if love is a river,
your smile is its shore,
your voice its current,
your hand the moonlight spilled upon its waters.
O joy that breathes from between your lips—
Stay, so I may stay.

Whispers of Water

To you, O woman of dew and sap of life…
When the waters whisper songs of love,
I think of you
As if every drop knows your name,
calling it with a tenderness
only your voice could teach.
Light hangs gently
from the shoulder of a cloud whenever you remember me,
and mountains bow to listen—
just as I bow whenever your voice touches any corner of this heart.
The voices of waterfalls are your reflection in nature—
bending, bold, pure, healing—
asking for nothing but to be loved.
Beloved, have you ever placed
your hand upon the chest of a river?
You’d hear me then—
loving you in every pulse,
longing for you in every splash, chanting your name
with each flowing thread of water.
I do not write poetry—
I write you.
You are the language no one invented,
and the poem that wrote me
before I ever wrote it.
Every waterfall echoes your laughter
Every drop holds your image
Every trembling ripple pulls me back to you again and again. The path to you
is like reaching an endless spring—
I walk it with a longing no time can measure,
moistened only by my eyes whenever I miss you.
O lovelier than the whispers of water—
to you I give all that words cannot hold,
and all this heart whispers
when the universe is silent,
and you sing to me—
without a sound.

I Promise on My Honor, a poem by Fareed Agyakwah

I promise on my honor to stand and fight,
For lands once rich, now cracked and dry,
Where hunger prowls in the dead of night,
And echoes of sorrow rise in the sky,
Yet still, we dream with heads held high.
I promise on my honor to break the chain,
For hands that dig yet hold no gold,
Where greed has left a lasting stain,
And empty pots make hearts grow cold,
Still, our spirit is fierce and bold.
I promise on my honor to light the way,
For those who thirst where cattle tread,
Through darkest nights and skies of gray,
Where love and laughter once have bled,
Yet hope is stitched with dreams we thread.
I promise on my honor, take my hand,
For healing starts when truth is known,
Together strong, we rise and stand,
Through broken past and seeds we've sown,
Our future bright, our fate our own.

A Quest, a Poem by Debajani Das

We're all in quest for a word,
You, me, and all, forever blurred.
In temples, mosques, churches, and ashrams too,
We search for truth, but where is truth?

Within sacred books and wise wisdoms lie,
The answers we seek, but can't deny,
The truth within ourselves, we must explore,
Captivated by emotions we can't ignore.

Peace, peace' and peace
Not an outside phenomenon,
An inside embodiment, that's true ,
A source of divine solace, shining through.

Anger, jealousy, greed,
violence, and lust,
Cloud our minds anddistract us .
Let's look within, and find the way,
To peace and truth, from today.
